Keanan Johannesen scored the only goal to give Stellenbosch FC a 1-0 victory over Kruger United in the Premier Soccer League on Saturday. The win moves Stellenbosch up to ninth in the table, now on six points from their opening six matches of the campaign.
Johannesen struck in the 27th minute, finishing a move that proved decisive in a tight contest. The visitors had to withstand significant pressure, with Kruger United enjoying 62 per cent of possession and forcing goalkeeper Sage Stephens into three saves.
Stellenbosch started aggressively, with Devin Matsheke receiving a yellow card for a foul after just two minutes. The pattern of a physical, stop-start game was set early, with Kruger United's Katlego Mohamme also booked inside the first ten minutes. Against the run of play, Johannesen found the net to put Stellenbosch ahead.
Manager Gavin Hunt made a double substitution just before the hour mark, introducing Chumani Butsaka and Thabang Lebitso. The changes aimed to solidify the lead as Kruger United pushed for an equaliser. Their task became harder when Mohamme was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 77th minute, reducing them to ten men.

The result continues a positive recent run for Stellenbosch, whose form over the last five games reads two wins, two draws and a single loss. Top scorer Quan Christiano Plaatjies, who has three goals this season, was replaced in the 58th minute as part of Hunt's tactical reshuffle. The team's next challenge is an away trip to face high-flying Kaizer Chiefs on 17 October.
