Stellenbosch FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Sekhukhune United on Friday, a result that extends their winless run to three matches. Coach Gavin Hunt admitted his disappointment as his side dropped more points at home.
"Yeah, disappointed obviously we drew the game," Hunt told reporters after the match. The stalemate means Stellenbosch have taken just three points from their last six Premier Soccer League fixtures, with their only points in that period coming from a draw against Marumo Gallants nearly a month ago.
Sekhukhune United took the lead in the 63rd minute through Bethuel Muzeu. Stellenbosch's response came late, with veteran striker Bradley Grobler finding the net in the 87th minute. The 38-year-old's goal was his 130th in the Premier Soccer League, moving him past Siyabonga Nomvethe into second place on the competition's all-time scoring list. Only Peter Shalulile, with 134 goals, now sits above him.
Hunt had previously indicated he did not expect Grobler to last the full match, but the forward's late intervention salvaged a point. The coach is still working without some of his more experienced players, who remain unavailable.
The draw leaves Stellenbosch FC ninth in the Premier Soccer League table with six points from six games. Their record shows one win, three draws, and two defeats, with seven goals scored and seven conceded. They are 14 points behind early leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Their recent form reads DDLWD from the last five outings, a sequence that includes the draw with Sekhukhune, a goalless draw at Durban City, and a defeat to Golden Arrows.
The team now has a week to prepare for a trip to face league newcomers Kruger United.
