Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt has explained why the club decided not to sign former Kaizer Chiefs left-back Happy Mashiane following a pre-season assessment. The 28-year-old, who previously played under Hunt at Naturena, failed to secure a contract due to concerns over his match fitness and lack of recent competitive action.
Why did Stellenbosch FC reject Mashiane?
Hunt stated that Mashiane had not played regular football for several years, managing only a handful of games since his time at Kaizer Chiefs. The defender's loan spell with Siwelele FC during the 2025/26 season was particularly unsuccessful, with just one appearance under Lehlohonolo Seema. His final months at Naturena under Nasreddine Nabi saw him completely frozen out of the first team.

Speaking at the Betway Premiership launch, Hunt emphasized that Mashiane needs consistent game time to regain his form. He suggested the player should find a team where he can log 30 to 40 matches before considering a move to a high-flying side like Stellenbosch. "We can't take him because it will take time, and we need somebody now," Hunt concluded.

Mashiane's last competitive match for Kaizer Chiefs was in the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign, where he made three starts and six substitute appearances before being loaned out. With his contract mutually terminated, the left-footed player must now focus on rebuilding his career elsewhere before potentially returning to a top-tier club.
